The development of the golf course at Karen was first mooted in 1933 and by 1938 the first nine holes had been laid out.The second nine holes were laid out in 1943 (Rhino’s in the Rough – A golfer’s guide to Kenya).
In the formative years at Karen, the course was home to wildlife including lions, buffalo, zebras and baboons. Up to the 1960s, lions were common on the golf course. Few changes to the golf course have been implemented on the course although the length of the golf course has been increased on numerous occasions. In recent years, a few bunkers, new greens and water features have been added to the golf course.
Sadly, the only wildlife on the golf course now are the resident wild pigs that occupy the wetlands to the left of the 18th hole and a few small herbivores that roam the course. In Robert Sidorsky’s book “Golf Courses of the World – 365 days” the author describes a list of 365 courses from around the world, a course for each day. In the author’s own words, “the goal of the book was to present the pageantry and poetry of golf around the globe. Each of the courses in the book was selected because it has something of unique interest to offer through a combination of design, history, geographic setting and plain old charm”.
Few golf courses in Africa make up the list and only one Kenyan golf course, the Karen Country Club, is on this exclusive list. In the book, 365-days, the Karen Country Club is in good company alongside renown courses such as the Augusta National in Georgia, TPC Saw grass in Florida, the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in New York, the Mission Hills Golf Club in China, the Fancourt Links in George, South Africa, Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland and the Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club in England.

ETIQUETTE AND DRESS
Golf attire is required while on the golf course.
Smart casual dress code at the clubhouse after 7:30pm
The Club has a policy on communication devices and has reserved various areas for use of such devices. Designated smoking areas are available.

Monday – Wednesday & Friday 2,000/- (9 holes) & 3,500/- (18 holes)
Saturday, Sunday & Holidays 4,000/- whether 9 or 18 holes (Subject to availability of slots)
